If Only... (11)

If only Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo were a movie.

Haven't read or heard of the book yet? Here's a taste:

The Shadow Fold, a swathe of impenetrable darkness, crawling with monsters that feast on human flesh, is slowly destroying the once-great nation of Ravka.

Alina, a pale, lonely orphan, discovers a unique power that thrusts her into the lavish world of the kingdom’s magical elite—the Grisha. Could she be the key to unravelling the dark fabric of the Shadow Fold and setting Ravka free?

The Darkling, a creature of seductive charm and terrifying power, leader of the Grisha. If Alina is to fulfill her destiny, she must discover how to unlock her gift and face up to her dangerous attraction to him.

But what of Mal, Alina’s childhood best friend? As Alina contemplates her dazzling new future, why can’t she ever quite forget him?

If you've read my review of Shadow and Bone, you know just how much I adore the story. As a huge fan of the fantasy genre both on paper and on screen, I would love to see a film version.

I think this novel has major potential for success as an adaptation for a few reasons. First off, let's face it--there's an innate desire to believe within all of us. Whether it's magic, fairy tales, mythology, etc., there will always be an audience for fantasy flicks. In addition, Shadow and Bone contains a little something for everyone; there's historical context, action, sorcery, friendship, and even a hint of romance.

The two big factors in a production such as this one would be setting and casting. The land of Ravka is essentially an alternate Russia, so finding proper locations would be important. The cast, in turn, would not only have to match the character descriptions but also fit in with the background. Special effects would also be significant, but when the dementors of Harry Potter can freak me out, I'm sure a team of professionals would have no problem eliciting the same reaction from the volcra and other creatures in the book.

I, for one, would be thrilled if Shadow and Bone is ever made into a movie.

What do you think? Feel free to sound off in the comments! :)

  1. I would love this book to be a movie (and the other books to) I think it would work great on the screen. There is a kick-ass heroin, two attractive males, fantasy elements and a good world-building. Yep, would be great!
