Review: Iron Daughter by Julie Kagawa

The Iron Daughter (Iron Fey, #2)

Half Summer faery princess, half human, Meghan has never fit in anywhere. Deserted by the Winter prince she thought loved her, she is prisoner to the Winter faery queen. As war looms between Summer and Winter, Meghan knows that the real danger comes from the Iron fey—ironbound faeries that only she and her absent prince have seen. But no one believes her.Worse, Meghan's own fey powers have been cut off. She's stuck in Faery with only her wits for help. Trusting anyone would be foolish. Trusting a seeming traitor could be deadly. But even as she grows a backbone of iron, Meghan can't help but hear the whispers of longing in her all-too-human heart.

The Iron Daughter starts off right where the Iron King left off. Basically in the first book Meghan's little brother Ethan was kidnapped, and Meghan was out looking for him. Little did she know, her brother's dissapearence was out of the ordinary. Her search for her brother unraveled a whole new world, and completely complicated her love life. In book two of the series, Meghan finds herself in a jail cell. Meghan is help hostage in the winter kingdom, but that is now the worst part. The one she loves is ignoring her. Meghan is in the toughest of all situations. She is not safe in the Nevernever. Both Winter and Summer courts want her, but all she wants is her old life...and Ash.

The Iron Daughter  was quite entertaining and to be honest I found it pretty funny. With all the seriousness and war brewing, the humor really balanced the book out. Grim, the cat, was probably the funniest thing in the book. His constant sarcasm, and dark humor really added life to the book. Minor characters such as Grim and Ironhorse (I keep wanting to call him Horse Face for some reason). The life they brought added a variety in tone, throughout the novel.

Needless to say our main characters were still going strong. Meghan has finally begun to discover who she is. She is tougher, but with her crazy life her emotions are a big jumbled mess! Then you have Puck. Sweet and darling Puck. Puck is the 'good guy' the guy who should be with Meghan. I feel so bad for him, he is stuck in the love triangle with Meghan and Ash, and everyone knows that Meghan will always go for Ash. Ash is a total bad-ass, winter, tormented, and forbidden love is the "in thing" for young adult right now. So it's expected she would be with him, and the Iron Daughter  just convinced me to like Ash.

Even with the amazing setting of the Nevernever, the life like characters, and humorous moments The Iron Daughter  fell a bit short for me. I was left wanting more, but while the first book took me a night to read, this one took me a week. Every time I picked the book up, I wanted to put the book down after a while. I felt that is was much slower and was missing out on the fast paced plot the first one had. At times I felt the book was dragging, and I was losing interest in the story. But lucky enough right before I would put it down something catastrophic always happened. That's what saved the book for me.

Overall I would give this book a 3.5/ 5. Even though I enjoyed much of the book, there were just too many things that were lacking for me. I am hopping once I read the Iron Princess everything will change for the better! So go and give the  Iron Daughter a shot, it's a great book but it is a bit to slow for my taste.

  2. One question: when you say "Iron Queen" in this review do you mean Daughter?? Because there isn't an Iron Princess book... :)

I love Grim so much <3 my fave character of the series, hands down! While I liked the first two books, I think the last two (Queen and Knight) are the BEST of the series. And Knight totally won me over for Ash *swoon* I hope you enjoy them when you get to read them!
