What was your inspiration to write your book?
I suffered a friendship breakup in college that really affected me--it's terrible to lose a best friend, but people don't focus on it as much as they focus on romantic breakups. So I always knew I wanted to tell a story that involved losing a friend, and that was my starting point.
Why did you start writing books for young adults?

I find people who read YA novels, both teens and adults, are an enthusiastic and passionate group of people. Total fun. I like hanging out with people who, in the very best sense, never stopped being 17.
Any tips or tricks for aspiring writers?
Finish something. It's often fun and exciting to start a new story, but actually getting through the (excruciating) middle part and over to the other side (the end!) is a real practice in writing-writing. I think if you can finish a novel, you can get published. Maybe not the first time you write one, but if you keep writing and finishing stories, you'll learn a little each time and you are WELL on your way.

The beginning of summer is such a ripe-with-possibilities time. You can feel it in the air, right? Everyone is tingling with anticipation of beach days, outdoor cafe time, iced coffees and vacations! Also: Leisure reading (my book).

Turtle or Fish?
Fish. I like how they are very self-contained and chill. Fish never get uptight. They just swim
and swim.
Reading or Writing ?
Tumblr_m3ehn8eqst1rsm53yo1_500_largeRight now: Reading. (Because I'm supposed to be writing.) But some days, when the iced coffee is sweet and the flow is right, it's all about writing. Those are the best, best days.
Favorite City in the world?
I have to go with NYC, my home for the past 11 years. But a very close second is Madrid, Spain. It's the first city I ever lived in and it has a very special part of my heart. It's gorgeous, full of park space and glorious museums, and the food is divine.
