I suffered a friendship breakup in college that really affected me--it's terrible to lose a best friend, but people don't focus on it as much as they focus on romantic breakups. So I always knew I wanted to tell a story that involved losing a friend, and that was my starting point. Why did you start writing books for young adults?
I find people who read YA novels, both teens and adults, are an enthusiastic and passionate group of people. Total fun. I like hanging out with people who, in the very best sense, never stopped being 17.Any tips or tricks for aspiring writers?
Finish something. It's often fun and exciting to start a new story, but actually getting through the (excruciating) middle part and over to the other side (the end!) is a real practice in writing-writing. Maybe not the first time you write one, but if you keep writing and finishing stories, you'll learn a little each time and you are WELL on your way. What is the best part about having your book released in May?
The beginning of summer is such a ripe-with-possibilities time. You can feel it in the air, right? Everyone is tingling with anticipation of beach days, outdoor cafe time, iced coffees and vacations! Also: Leisure reading (my book).Speed Round Questions (Pick3)

I have to go with NYC, my home for the past 11 years. But a very close second is Madrid, Spain. It's the first city I ever lived in and it has a very special part of my heart. It's gorgeous, full of park space and glorious museums, and the food is divine.

ReplyDeleteLosing a friend can be just as bad as a romantic breakup. It's never fun to lose a friend or to drift a part but at least the good memories should be kept.
