When You Were Mine

What was your inspiration to write your book?
My own heartbreak. I really knew Rosaline—I had been the girl that got left behind before. I just felt like this was my story to tell—and I know it’s one that other people can relate to.
What is one book you wish, you had written?
Harry Potter, of course!
What makes your book so different from all the books out there?
Well I think books that we really love, that stick with us, act as friends--- sometimes through hard times. I hope When You Were Mine will be one for you. I hope it will hold your hand, if you are heartbroken, and I hope for all of you who remember what that felt like it will provide a mirror into how far you have come. I think heartbreak and first love are really universal experiences, and I think they are incredibly special ones. The book also drives home my life philosophy—that it’s not what happens that matters, but what you choose to do with what happens. Life is a dialogue between fate and free will.
Who was your favorite character in the whole story? And why?
Len or Charlie. Charlie is a controversial figure. I know some people won’t like her. But she is a true friend, a fierce friend. I respect Charlie (and fear her, just a little).

Any tips or tricks for aspiring writers?
Be consistent. Own the identity—you are a writer if you write. Period. Don’t wait for a book deal to call yourself what you are. And buy Stephen King’s On Writing!

What is the best part about having your book released in May?
The emails and tweets and messages I have already gotten from readers saying they are going through what Rosaline is and they are crying and healing right along with her. That? That’s really something else. I’m so grateful.
