In Honor by Jessi Kirby

In Honor

Hours after her brother’s military funeral, Honor opens the last letter Finn ever sent. In her grief, she interprets his note as a final request and spontaneously decides to go to California to fulfill it.
Honor gets as far as the driveway before running into Rusty, Finn’s best friend since third grade and his polar opposite. She hasn’t seen Rusty in ages, but it’s obvious he is as arrogant and stubborn as ever—not to mention drop-dead gorgeous. Despite Honor’s better judgment, the two set off together on a voyage from Texas to California. Along the way, they find small and sometimes surprising ways to ease their shared loss and honor Finn’s memory—but when shocking truths are revealed at the end of the road, will either of them be able to cope with the consequences?
After reading Jessi Kirby's Moonglass I knew I had to read In Honor right away. I literally did just that; right after I finished Moonglass I picked up In Honor (they had early copies at LATFoB). And all I can say is that is was better than Moonglass. <- Shocking right!

In Honor follows a teen girl dealing with a horrible tragedy. After losing her brother. Finn, Honor's life has not been the same. After receiving a letter from her brother sent out months before, Honor is set on a mission to discover who she is. Tagging along with Honor is Rusty, Finn's best friend. Rusty and Honor learn to settle their differences, and realize who they are as people in the amazing road trip tale.

Kirby has successfully created the perfect 'road-trip novel' with In Honor. From the moment Honor get's the letter, to the moment she hits the road and reaches California you can't stop reading. In Honor is the epitome of  Kirby's simplistic stories. Simplistic meaning that the story doesn't require a lot of embellishment; the story itself is complete with the little small details. Though contemporaries are realistic, there is always that unrealistic touch to it. In Honor was completely realistic, and everything seem so possible. Honor's emotions and action seem to match any teenage girl who has been through tragedy.

Honor was an amazing character. She was strong, and very composed. If the closest person to you were to die, most people wouldn't be this composed. Honor on the other hand held herself up, even though in the inside she felt horrible. She was like any wishy-washy teenager. I loved her sarcastic personality when it jumped out of her. Sarcasm is just hilarious, and the bits of humor sprinkled throughout the book really completed the book. While reading you can tell Honor is not one of the desperate girls. She knows how to fend for her self, and her strong will was truly something admirable. She may sound perfect but she isn't, she makes mistakes, does things on a whim, and she has her stubborn moments. And the small romance that sparks through the novel between Honor and Rusty is also very sweet.

This brings me to Rusty, Honor's brother's best friend, who well is having a lot of issues. He drinks to cope with his best friend's death. Honor doesn't like Rusty all that much, thinking he is the reason her brother went out to war and died. Rusty on the other hand has something against Honor, because he knows something she doesn't. But while reading you realize he is exactly what Honor needs. He is overprotective, but he knows how to have fun. He helps Honor open her eyes, and help discover man truths that revolve around her. Not to mention he is also hot now, and he is a kind soul when he isn't drunk. Rusty and Honor seem like such an odd pair together, yet they complement and bring the best out of each other.

In Honor satisfied my need for an amazing book. While reading you will laugh, cry, want to scream at someone, but you will love every moment of it. I highly recommend the latest novel by Kirby, you won't be sorry! Overall this book is a quick, beautiful and well written read.
