Interview with Reece Hirsch and Giveaway !

The Insider
Reece Hirsch

Here is a short Preview of The Insider:
First corporate attorney Will Connelly's colleague hurtles to his death outside his office window. Within days, Will is a prime suspect in a murder, the target of an S.E.C. insider trading investigation, and a pawn in a complex criminal scheme involving the Russian mafia and a ruthless terrorist plot. Now, to top things off, he must ensure a deadly enemy doesn't gain access to the nation's most sensitive and confidential information-that has the power to do incalculable, irrevocable harm.  (goodreads)
I am so excited to have Mr. Hirsch as a guest on the blog, as well as telling everyone about this great book.

Now the Interview !

*Congratulations for a successful debut novel! I really enjoyed this book. Before writing you studied Law at USC,and then you began working at a Law firm. So what made you decide to go into writing?
I’ve always wanted to write fiction, it just took me a while to get serious about it. Before I went to law school, I attended journalism school at Northwestern University and edited and published an arts and entertainment magazine in Atlanta. When I turned 40, I decided that I had procrastinated long enough, and I finally got to work on the book that ultimately became THE INSIDER. I still have a full-time legal practice, so it’s never easy finding time to write.
*Though i am usually not a big fan of Thrillers, yours i seemed to enjoy very much :). What inspired you to write a thriller, what was your muse or inspiration for such and intense murder mystery?
I’ve been practicing law for 21 years now, so I chose to write a legal thriller because it’s the world that I know. I tried to start from a realistic place in my book, writing about a character, my protagonist Will Connelly, who was as true-to-life as I could make him. He’s an ambitious, driven young attorney on the verge of making partner in a big San Francisco law firm. Then I took Will’s well-ordered life and turned it upside down, starting in chapter one when he watches one of his colleagues plummet to his death from the roof of the building.

*How did you make up the character of Will Connelly, was a friend or family an inspiration for him, or like most great ideas he came to you in a dream?
I know plenty of lawyers who are very much like Will Connelly. He’s a composite of a few real people. In fact, I’ve been a little like Will from time to time, particularly back when I was billing hours like crazy trying to make partner.

*If the book became a movie, who would you cast for the characters ?
I think James McAvoy from Atonement and the latest X-Men movie would make a great Will. I think Ryan Gosling would be good, too. As for the other characters, I’m a bit stumped.

*What's the best part of being in Law, is it really stressful , or is it like in the movies where everyone is yelling at each other?
The best part about being a lawyer is that I get to solve people’s problems. It's definitely stressful, but there’s not too much yelling in my area of practice, which is privacy and healthcare law. I think litigators do most of the yelling, and I decided early on that that wasn’t for me.

*what other authors do you appreciate and really enjoy reading books by? And what books have you recently read that you would suggest as a must read?
I could go on and on listing my favorite authors – a few of my favorites are Richard Price, Elmore Leonard, Don Winslow, Colin Harrison and Kate Atkinson. As for recent must-reads, I’d recommend “The Dawn Patrol” by Don Winslow, “The Finder” by Colin Harrison, “Lush Life” by Richard Price, “Case Histories” by Kate Atkinson, and “Winter’s Bone” by Daniel Woodrell.

*And lastly; the classic question...if you were stranded on an island what 5 things would you want to have?
I would want to have: (1) My iPod, (2) a stack of the books listed above, (3) a case of Maker’s Mark, (4) my iPad and (5) just to be practical for a moment, a lighter.
