Review: Torrent by Lisa Tawn Bergren

Gabi and Lia Betarrini have learned to control their time travel, and they return from medieval Italy to save their father from his tragic death in modern times.
But love calls across the centuries, and the girls are determined to return forever—even though they know the Black Plague is advancing across Europe, claiming the lives of one-third of the population. In the suspenseful conclusion of the River of Time series, every decision is about life … and death.
Though reluctant to dive into Torrent because I didn't want the story to end, I caved under the anxiety of not knowing what happened with Gabi, Marcello, Lia, and Luca. I wasn't ready to let go of these dynamic characters, all of whom have a place in my all-time favorites, just yet.

The she-wolves of Siena are back in modern times--well, more modern than fourteenth century Italy that is. Along with their mother, Gabi and Lia are racing against the clock to bring back their father who was deceased at the beginning of the series. Now experienced with their time travel abilities, the Bettarini sisters are able to jump from their time to that of their beloveds. The question is whether they will be able to stay in this plague and war-ravaged place or die trying.

What I loved so much about Torrent is the fact that it calls into question the very relationship between Gabi and Marcello. Of course, I wasn't a fan of the love triangle method because I have so much adoration for Marcello, but I truly enjoyed watching both characters contemplate and make potential life-altering decisions that served to shake up the plot. Lia and Luca were in the background a bit more, but every appearance they made was even sweeter because of it. Also, the addition of Gabi and Lia's father was absolutely delightful, especially when it came time for him to see just what his girls had been up to.

I was so thrilled when I discovered the novellas associated with this series, Bourne and Tributary, both of which follow Lia and Luca since Gabi and Marcello's story has basically been completed. I can't wait to see what's in store for those hopefully up-and-coming lovebirds. Fans of Lisa Tawn Bergren and the River of Time books will not be disappointed with this mesmerizing finale.
